PARKING RESTRICTIONS - TOW ZONES

Chief Paul F. Tucker

Business 978-744-0171   Non-Emergency Request for Police 978-744-1212

The City of Salem's yearly Street Sweeping Program begins on Thursday April 1st, 2010 and a brand new intensive cleaning initiative within our neighborhoods will begin on Monday, April 26th, 2010. This year marks new changes to the program so please read the information below.  Please note that parking restrictions for the Program could result in vehicles being ticketed and towed (at the owner's expense) to facilitate the cleaning of streets.

Entrance Corridor Street Sweeping (see calendar for more details), will begin on Thursday, April 1st and continue through April 14th. Residents should consult the 'No Parking/Tow Zone' signs posted along each of these entrance corridors that notify drivers of what day parking restrictions are in effect.  Sweeping schedules alternate between the odd and even sides of the street so residents are able to alternate parking their cars on the opposite side of the street during scheduled sweeping days. In these areas, parking is prohibited from 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. Also, the posted tow zone for the even side of Essex Street (from #2-98) will be swept on Wednesday, April 14th from 7:30am to 9:00 am.  For a detailed schedule, you may consult www.salem.com under the Public Works Department page for the 2010 sweeping schedule.

After April, these entrance corridors will be swept on an as needed basis and will no longer have monthly parking restrictions unless a special posted no parking sweep is necessary.

Two changes in other posted no parking/tow zones will be:  (1)  The Point Neighborhood will be incorporated into the new residential schedule and will be swept on Tuesday, April 27th from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and, (2) 1-178 Derby Street will be incorporated into the residential schedule and be swept during the day on Tuesday, May 4th.

Beginning Monday, April 26th and running through May 7th, a new intensified residential street sweeping program will take place.  Under this new program, we will be able to clean all our neighborhoods in just two weeks.  Each neighborhood will be posted with temporary No Parking Tow Zones signs and sweepers will be sweeping both sides of the street on the same day. Sweep days are the next day after your trash day.  To find your street sweeping dates, just locate what zone your street is in on the 2010 Residential street sweeping schedule, and match it with the calendar.  Monday sweep schedules are for the preceding Friday's trash day.  For example, if you live on Atlantic Street, which has a Friday trash pickup, and you are located in Zone One, both sides of your street will be swept on Monday, April 26th.  For a detailed schedule, log onto www.salem.com under the Public Works Department page for the 2010 sweeping schedule. The days prior to your scheduled sweep is a perfect time for residents to sweep the sand and debris from their sidewalks into the curb line on the street, just please do not make mounds or piles, as they are more difficult for the sweeper to pick up.

City streets will be broken down into two zones.  Streets in Zone One will be swept during the week of April 26-30th, and streets listed in Zone Two will be swept during the week of May 3-7th  (see calendar for more details). Residential sector sweeping will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Residents will be able to use the previously swept entrance corridors as alternative parking areas on the day of their sweep.  Another neighborhood sweep is scheduled for July 12 through July 23, 2010.

Weather cancellations will be posted on salem.com

To help get the word out, the City will use its Connect CTY, Reverse 911 system, to send out messages.  Hard copies will be available at the Department of Public Works garage, Salem City Hall and the Salem Public Library or click here for the on-line calendar.  They can also be can be obtained by calling the Public Services Department at 978-744-3302.

Entrance corridor residents will also receive targeted automated messages, flyers will be placed on vehicles to serve as a reminder to car owners to park on the opposite side of the street on their respective sweep day, and orange tow zone signs will be placed along posted routes.

Residents in each neighborhood will also receive a targeted automated message and temporary orange tow zone signs will be placed throughout the designated sweeping area.

Changes at a Glance

Residential sweeping will take place from April 26- May 7 and July 12-23.  Both sides of the street will be swept on the scheduled day.  No parking/tow zones will be in effect in each scheduled area from 8:00am until 5:00pm.

5:00AM to 7:00AM sweeping will only take place the first two weeks in April and then the posted tow zone signage will be removed along those entrance corridors.

2-98 Essex Street will only be swept on Wednesday, April 14 from 7:30am-9:00am and then the posted tow zone signage will be removed.
